Spanish Reading and Translation Workshop

Catalog description

This course is an advanced introduction to professional translation from Spanish to English and vice versa as a professional practice. The objective is for students to learn the theory and practice of translation while reviewing linguistic subfields such syntax (word order), semantics (meaning), lexicology (vocabulary), pragmatics (language use and context), and sociolinguistics (language in relation to social factors). Accurate translation also requires in-depth study of culture-broadly defined-and its role in localization. Students will work with moderately to highly difficult texts across a number of genres, e.g., non-specialized and specialized texts, those that combine words and images, and professional and literary texts. Students will increase their critical reading, research, and general localization skills, and develop proficiency in using AI for translation and evaluating and post-editing its resulting product.
