Chinese Popular Culture: A Game of Learning
Carnegie Mellon University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
SPRING 2026: There are two reasons why this course is titled "A Game of Learning" (and not "A Game of Thrones"): 1. We will use the video game Chinese Parents as our primary learning material to explore, discuss, and analyze various aspects of Chinese society and popular culture—such as naming practices, education, school life, and youth culture. 2. The course itself follows a gameful learning framework. Every effort and accomplishment earns you valuable points (yes, just like in a game!) that contribute to your final grade. Except for a few core assignments, you can decide which other tasks to complete based on your personal learning style and interests. With this flexibility, you'll shape your own learning journey, and your own unique "game ending." Prerequisite: 82-332
