AI for the Humanities: Learning, Reflection, and Creative Practices

This interdisciplinary course brings together experts from diverse fields to explore the dynamic relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Humanities. The course is structured around two central questions: How can AI enrich the field of Humanities research, teaching, and applications? What perspectives can Humanities studies offer to the development of AI? By addressing these questions, the course offers unique insights into how these domains can mutually enrich and challenge each other. During the first two-thirds of the semester, you'll engage with guest speakers from various disciplines at CMU, including Digital Humanities, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, School of Fine Arts, Tepper School of Business, Language Technology Institute, and Heinz College. Industry professionals from tech giants like Google and Amazon will also come and share their perspectives. Each topic introduced by the guest speakers will be followed by in-depth discussions and seminars, providing a well-rounded view of AI's impact on humanities and vice versa. The last few weeks of the course will be dedicated to collaborative group projects, where students will apply the knowledge and skills they've acquired to their own AI for Humanities projects.
