Whether you are learning Japanese for the first time or reconnecting with a language tied to your heritage or personal interests, this course supports your development as a language user and finding your new identities in speaking Japanese. Throughout the semester, you will build foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Japanese while exploring how language reflects and shapes identity and community membership. Through everyday contexts—such as making plans, visiting someone's home, or participating in classroom life—you will consider questions like: What makes a request polite in Japanese? How do we express who we are in a new language? How does a community shape communication and connection? This online course combines weekly in-person practice with flexible, self-paced online work using an interactive eBook designed for independent and collaborative learning. Students are encouraged to bring curiosity, questions, and personal experiences into our shared learning space.
