EHPP Capstone Course

Catalog description

In the Fall 2026 EHPP capstone course, students will carry out a systematic research project, grounded in both historical and ethical/philosophical data and analytic perspectives, that examines a compelling, modern-day public policy issue. Students may work individually or collaboratively with one or two classmates on a topic of their own choice, or on one of several topics that Professor Schlossman will suggest. Inevitably, the feasibility of a data-driven project is a paramount concern in a one-semester research course. Professor Schlossman will closely advise all students on the design, data availability, and "do-ability" of their proposed research topics, in order to ensure their timely completion and grading by the end of Fall semester. The class will meet regularly for discussion of relevant readings (advance preparation is essential; you are expected to participate). Each student will also present orally in class on several occasions regarding their research-in-progress. In your role as audience, I expect you to offer helpful, critical input at each presentation. Your collective voice is as important as mine in helping each student produce their best possible final product by semester's end. Your final grade will take into account the quality and regularity of your contributions to class discussion. However, as is inevitable in a research seminar, the excellence of your final paper will be the principal criterion determining your final grade.
