History of Indian Yoga and Meditation
Carnegie Mellon University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Yoga and meditation have gained popularity in Western countries as methods for stress relief, enhancing flexibility, physical strength, and mental well-being. But what are the original contexts and theoretical foundations of these practices? How did they evolve over time across different regions in Asia, and how were they influenced by encounters with modernity? This course delves into these questions, examining the underlying doctrines of yoga and meditation, pivotal texts, influential teachers, and the historical development of these practices. Using classical Indian religious and philosophical texts in translation, secondary studies, testimonials, and films, this course provides a foundational understanding of yoga and meditation's journey from their origins to their current manifestations. This course is open to all students and majors alike, requires no prerequisites, and may be used to fulfill one of the elective requirements for the Religious Studies minor.
