The Pittsburgh Review of Books

Catalog description

In this course students will learn about editing, publishing, and freelance writing, with an emphasis on work that could be considered the public humanities, that is essays and reviews that serve to make scholarly work accessible to a wider audience. To that end, all students will be working on preparing an essay, review, or interview that could eventually be published in the Pittsburgh Review of Books. Inspired by publications like The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Baffler, N+1, Aeon, and The New Inquiry, the PRB is a Carnegie Mellon based publication featuring cultural and literary criticism, with a focus on issues of technology as they intersect with the humanities. Students in the class are not necessarily considered staff for the publication, though the course is open to students who are currently employed by the magazine.
