The Pittsburgh Review of Books, an interdisciplinary public humanities publication that publishes engaged, incisive, and smart cultural criticism and analysis for an educated and non-specialist audience is looking for students who will work as staff writers. In this course, students will learn about freelance writing, editing, and publishing while gaining real-world, hands-on experience with a publication housed in the English Department that has featured Pulitzer nominees, Guggenheim Fellows, and first-time writers. In addition to the practical work of helping to run a national publication, students will also learn about the burgeoning movement, discipline, and methodology of public humanities, becoming familiar with the publishing ecosystem and the variety of sites and authors who work within this environment. The first semester will be focused on the writing of long-form narrative journalism while the second semester examines trade book publishing. Students are free to enroll in either or both of those courses. Prerequisites: 76-101 or 76-102
