Reading in Forms: Fiction

Catalog description

Fiction takes many shapes and forms. This course will focus on the short story and the different modes that the short story uses. We'll read stories by maximalists like Henry James or David Foster Wallace and minimalists like Ernest Hemingway or Raymond Carver. And fantastical stories like the folk tale and Octavia Butler's imagination of other worlds. Or contemporary stories about culture and identity by Jhumpa Lahiri or Junot Diaz. We'll consider how fiction has shifted from the 19th century through the 20th, and how it expresses and responds to its culture.
