This course provides a concise but comprehensive overview of China, a dynamic economic superpower that no one can afford to ignore. The emphasis on how its ancient culture lies behind today's rapid change. Topics include the new urban China, leadership in infrastructure and renewables, business practices, everyday life and customs, education and health, the online world, the spectacular success of the "mayor economy," the Belt and Road initiative, the Chinese take on politics, the influence of Confucianism, and the road ahead. The course will draw on the instructor's experiences while living, working, and traveling in China. Student teams will make class presentations on China-related research topics of their choice. There are no other assignments to be completed outside of class, and no exams, but regular attendance is expected.
