This course explores chamber music with piano from the Classical through the Romantic periods—not just as repertoire, but as a dynamic, collaborative art form. Through representative works by major composers of these eras—including figures such as Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, as well as Romantic composers such as Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky- we'll uncover how their lives, artistic environments, and musical ideas shaped the chamber works we continue to perform today. But this is more than a traditional lecture course. Combining academic study with interactive musical exploration, we will actively listen, dive into scores, and uncover how texture, form, and ensemble roles function in real time. You'll learn how musicians make decisions : how they lead, respond, balance, and shape interpretation within an ensemble. Throughout the semester, short demonstrations and fun, low-pressure sight-reading sessions will bring the music off the page, allowing you to experience how ideas translate into sound. By the end of the course, you won't just recognize the repertoire—you'll understand it from the inside, listen more deeply, and approach chamber music with greater confidence, curiosity, and artistic insight.
