Basic Harmony II

Catalog description

Building upon the fundamentals of diatonic harmony learned in Basic Harmony I, this course explores chromatic elements in Western classical music from approximately 1600 to 1900. It covers tonicizations and modulations, sequences, seventh chords, modal mixture, chromatic mediants, Neapolitan sixth chords, and augmented sixth chords, mainly through completing a four-voice texture for a given melody or bass, and through analysis of short passages.
