Sustainably Sculpting Space
Carnegie Mellon University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
How do we create beautiful worlds without exhausting our own? This course explores scenic design for live performance through the lens of sustainable innovations. Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a guide, we will investigate the theoretical and practical means of approaching design differently through hands-on studio practice. Moving beyond the traditional "build and burn" approach, we will re-think our relationship to and process(es) of working with materials, labor, and systems of production. This course positions the designer as an environmental steward; one who makes critically informed creative choices. By the end of the term, students will develop a professional toolkit for building worlds that respects our community and our planet without compromising artistic excellence.
