This course provides an essential exploration of race and theatre, focusing on cultural competency and the historical evolution of diverse theatrical practices. Open to all theatre students, the curriculum emphasizes key skills in design, dramaturgy, and performance while critically addressing themes of race and identity. Students will engage in workshops that cover vital topics such as cultural competency, aesthetics in design, and production management. The course will feature guest artists from Broadway and television, offering insights into successful practices that navigate outside traditional structures. Key areas of focus include casting, budgeting, season selection, and the creation of inclusive theatre spaces. Through collaborative projects, students will develop research, writing, and analytical skills, allowing them to engage effectively with the complexities of race in theatre. Additionally, the course will explore innovative techniques employed by diverse theatre companies and examine the financial aspects of production to prepare students for industry challenges.
