Catalog description

In this course we will explore the mechanical properties of biological tissues. Learners will gain hands-on experience conducting a range of mechanical tests (compression, tension, bending, indentation and variations of these test) using both engineered materials and biological tissues. We will discuss the underlying composition and structure of each tissue to understand how they influence the observed mechanical response. This will lead to analytical and finite element modeling of material behavior. Learners will fit these models to experimental data to estimate material properties. As part of this course, we will review relevant academic papers, hear from experts, and discuss ASTM and ISO testing standards. While our particular focus will be on orthopedic tissues, the techniques will apply broadly. Note that this course involves dissection of animal joints and tissues.
