Medical devices are apparatuses widely used in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases. The invention and adoption of medical devices is one of the major driving forces for the revolution in modern healthcare. This course takes a systematic and quantitative approach for the design and implementation of medical devices. We will mainly focus on three major medical device categories: bioelectrical devices, biomechanical devices, and medical devices enabled by emerging technologies. For each category, domain knowledge and fundamental principles will be introduced, and detailed design, implementation, and performance analysis will be studied. Analytical equations and simulation tools will be used when appropriate. The course will prepare students with a solid foundation to further study, research, and work in medical device related fields.
