Tartan Athletics Analytics
Carnegie Mellon University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The Tartan Athletics Analytics course gives students hands-on experience applying statistics and data science methodologies to real-world datasets, and communicating results to stakeholders in the Carnegie Mellon Athletics Department (aka Tartan Athletics). Students will gain skills in approaching real world problems, critical thinking, advanced statistical analysis, scientific writing, collaboration with clients, communicating results, and meeting expectations with respect to deliverables and timelines. The projects will change and rotate each semester. The course size is limited, and students with skill sets and interests matching expected projects will be given priority. We will also take into consideration whether or not a student has had a recent prior data science experience with the goal of providing experiences to a broad group of qualified students. Students do not need to be experts in sports analytics or have extensive knowledge in sports to be considered. This course is application based.
