Catalog description

This course aims to develop analytical skills and mathematical modeling skills across a broad spectrum of physical phenomena, stressing analogies in behavior of a wide variety of systems. Specific topics include estimation ("Fermi problems"), dimensional analysis and scaling in physical phenomena, exponential growth and decay, population models including the logistic equation, the harmonic oscillator with damping and driving forces (and analogous electrical systems), and wave phenomena with an emphasis on diffraction. Necessary mathematical techniques, including Taylor series, differential equations (analytical and numerical solutions), complex exponential functions, and complex impedance, are introduced as needed. Prerequisites: 21-122 and ( 33-152 or 33-142 or 33-122 )
