Catalog description

This course deals with simulating materials at the length scale of their microstructure and macrostructure. These continuum-scale simulation methods are important tools for Materials Engineers. We will cover advanced classical thermodynamics and its implementation in the CALPHAD method, phase transformations in multicomponent systems and phase field models, and finite element modeling of mechanical behavior, heat flow, and fluid flow. The course will utilize available software, so the focus will be on materials fundamentals, not their computational implementation. Use cases for the various methods will be taken from materials processing operations. At the end of this class students should be able to describe the simulation methods, perform basic simulations, and critically interpret results.
