Magnetism in Materials

Catalog description
This course will address magnetism in materials with an emphasis on magnetic properties and phenomena that are useful in various applications. The first half of the course will deal with fundamentals of magnetism in materials, including magnetostatics, the origins of magnetism at the atomic level, magnetic ordering in materials including ferro-, ferri-, and antiferromagnetism, magnetic anisotropy, and magnetotransport. The second half of the course will cover various applications and relevant magnetic materials classes, such as magnetic data storage, magneto-optics, magneto-calorics, multiferroics, superconductors, and magnetic semiconductors and insulators.
