Catalog description

This is Part II of a two-part course sequence (Part I is 27-432 ) concerned with the optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of materials. Students taking Part II will develop an in-depth understanding of the optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of materials. Topics the free electron and Lorentz oscillator models and their relationship with the optical and dielectric properties of metals and insulators, polarization mechanisms leading to piezo- and ferroelectricity; magnetization and its classification among materials; magnetic domains; and soft and hard magnets. Examples of applications will be discussed.
