Catalog description
The objective of this course is to convey some of the essential concepts in materials science and engineering that relate properties (strength, toughness, formability, elasticity, magnetism, thermal expansion, for example) to the microstructure (crystal structure, dislocation structure, grain size, atoms in solids solution, precipitate characteristic, cellular materials). These relationships will be illustrated in terms of idealized materials and actual materials used in many applications. The course contains both lectures and laboratory exercises. The labs will include studies of the anisotropic properties of composites and how recrystallization changes the microstructure and mechanical properties in metal alloys. Prerequisites: 27-217 and 27-216
