Catalog description

This course discusses working principles of internal combustion engines found in many practical applications. Focus is given to understanding the design of air handing system, in-cylinder fuel/air mixing, geometric design of the combustion chamber, engine performance and calibration, and mechanism of pollutant formation and reduction. Introductory discussion of advanced automotive engine concepts, alternative fuels, gas turbine engines, rocket engines, and hybrid electric vehicles is also provided. The course relies on a number of lab experiments, analysis of actual experimental data, and a combination of analytical and numerical homework assignments. 3 hrs. lecture 2 hrs. lab Prerequisites: 24-221 and 24-231 Course Website: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/satbirs/24421/
