Catalog description

This course will take a broad view on techniques and methods to decarbonize societal infrastructure, including computing, transportation, buildings, homes, and beyond to help address climate change concerns facing us. We will cover topics such as energy efficiency and how that differs from decarbonization techniques. We will look at different computational approaches towards decarbonization, including Life Cycle Carbon Assessment (LCA) methods, carbon-aware workload shifting in data centers, carbon-aware training and serving of ML workloads, carbon-aware smart homes and buildings, etc. This course will follow a hybrid structure including lectures, paper readings of latest research on the topics, in class presentations and discussions, and a project component.
