Catalog description

This course provides an overview of the field of societal computing, its history, goals, methods, and applications. It introduces the key concepts and frameworks for analyzing the social and ethical implications of computing technology, such as privacy, security, fairness, accountability, and human values. The course will be centered around short, interactive lectures, accompanied with class discussions. Panels of invited Societal Computing faculty will be invited to synthesize and further explore the topics introduced in lectures. Students will also participate in active learning experiences involving the critical analysis of media and technology artifacts and take turns presenting and leading class discussions throughout the semester. Prerequisites: 15-110 or 15-112
