Art and Machine Learning
Carnegie Mellon University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
ARS, the Latin root of the word art, refers to both art and science. Over time, these two fields, once viewed as separate, have increasingly converged in exciting and innovative ways. One of the most compelling intersections today lies between art and machine learning (ML). In this course, students will: (1) Gain knowledge of diverse machine learning methods and explore relevant case studies to produce creative outcomes. (2) Develop their own projects using the introduced methods. (3) Acquire an understanding of the latest developments in creative AI and AI-generated art. (4) Discuss contemporary issues at the intersection of AI and creativity, fostering critical engagement with both the technical and ethical dimensions of the field. No prior experience in machine learning or art practice is required—only curiosity and an openness to exploration. Course Website: https://sites.google.com/view/artml2025spring
