Catalog description

Genome editing technology has exploded since the recent discovery of bacterial CRISPR systems and just recently won the Nobel Prize in 2020. What started as a fundamental research endeavor has evolved into a large field of research that has opened the door to tackling problems in human health as disease as well as allowing us to develop new cutting-edge tools to investigate other questions in research. New and exciting applications are emerging every day. In this course we will explore the fundamentals of genome editing and the CRISPR system, issues that arise in use of this technology and how researchers are attempting to improve the technology. Additionally, applications of this technology to disease modeling, germ-line engineering, cell-based engineering, and disease therapy will be explored. This course focuses on reading and discussing primary literature in the fast growing and evolving field of genome editing. Prerequisites: 03-220 or 03-709 or 03-221 or 03-621
