Molecular Techniques

Catalog description

A laboratory based course that introduces students to modern molecular techniques. In addition to learning basic research laboratory skills, students will learn to isolate and purify DNA, analyze, manipulate DNA by restriction enzyme digestion, gel electrophoresis and ligation, label DNA by various methods, perform non-radioactive detection of Southern blot analyses, and perform polymerase chain reactions. Bacterial transformation and other microbial techniques will be used throughout. Molecular Forensic techniques are also explored and tested. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 342 and CHEM 227 (or concurrent enrollment). Lecture/Lab Lectures and laboratories are held in joint sessions.
