Catalog description

A survey of the four major divisions of Ocean Science: Physical, Chemical, Geological, and Biological. Physical oceanography includes waves, tides, ocean currents and deep circulations, as well as effects of heat, pressure, water density, heat capacitance, and sound transmission. Chemical Oceanography includes the chemical composition of seawater, the effects of freshwater inflows, biological influences, and chemical sedimentation. Geological Oceanography includes plate tectonics, seafloor spreading, sedimentation, rock formation, deep and shoreline changes, and ancient seafloor contributions to current landmass topography. Biological Oceanography includes life in the sea and sea-influenced shore environments. Cross-listed: ( ENVS 204 ) Prerequisite(s): None. Lecture/Lab Three lecture and three laboratory hours per week.
