Catalog description

Upper-division elective will survey unusual and important compositional techniques for piano, beginning with the 17th century and culminating with living composers of our time. Examples of both notation and execution techniques will be studied, demonstrated, and then applied in composition. Specific 20th and 21st century composers whose techniques will be discussed in depth may include Cowell, Ives, Cage, Crumb, Curtis-Smith, Diemer, Pärt, Santiago, Bolcom, and Say.
