When English critic F.R. Leavis declared that the great English novelists were Austen, Eliot, James, and Conrad, he emphasized these writers' intensely moral pre-occupation. No modern novelist has been more influenced by Conrad than Graham Greene, whose work has the same romantic subject matter and concerns with ethical judgments.
