Catalog description

This course integrates theory and practice in tutoring literacy and supporting children's learning and development. Students examine effective methods to teach and motivate children while exploring cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development through the intersections of students' identities (e.g., family, race, sex, gender, and cultural perspectives). Emphasis is placed on comprehension, questioning strategies, ELD approaches, learning differences, and creative engagement through theater and poetry. A concurrent 40-hour field experience in an elementary school provides opportunities for applied learning with developing readers. Service Learning may be required.
