Catalog description

In this interdisciplinary course, students from any field of study will learn how language has shaped society. Framed through discussion of Deaf communities and signed languages, students will discuss how different views of signed and spoken languages have influenced education, health, and legal systems. Students will make connections based on their own linguistic communities and experiences and, by the end of this course, will be able to assess and describe how language ideologies manifest in their respective fields and how we can move toward linguistic equity in society.
