This course explores the artistic traditions of China and Japan from ancient times to the present. Through an examination of painting, sculpture, ceramics, architecture, and calligraphy, students will analyze the cultural, religious, and historical influences that shaped these art forms. Topics include the development of Chinese landscape painting, Buddhist art, Japanese woodblock prints, and the impact of Zen aesthetics. The course also considers the evolution of modern and contemporary art in both regions, addressing themes of tradition, innovation, and global exchange.
