ART 100
Modern and Contemporary Native American Art.
California State University, Sacramento · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
A survey of 19th- and 20th-century Native North American art from across the continent. We will examine Native American cultures and ceremonies, the impact of European and later American contact with those cultures, and strategies of survivance employed by Native Americans, from contact to the present day. Our discussion will be framed around indigenous voices--in the arts and analyses--with emphasis on modern/contemporary artists and themes pertinent to their work: cultural reclamation, sovereignty and land-based practices.
