Examines the cultural dimension of human rights. Explores the emergence, evolution, and global spread of the idea of human rights. Explores how the concept of human rights and related conventions are contested, appropriated, adapted, or rejected in different cultural, and political contexts. Critically explores human rights theories, practices, contemporary human rights issues, and debates. Using select case studies from around the world, highlights how the human rights discourse mediates the relationship between specific groups of people, their national states, international conventions, and institutions.
