Catalog description

Course examines the notion that language is a critical means of reproducing systems of inequality, and a vital resource in recognizing and subverting those inequalities. Explores how ideologies about language and its use intersect with racialized, classed, gendered, and other understandings of 'good' citizens & selves across global contexts. Through such topics as 'Standard' languages and literacies, raciolinguistics, multilingualism, codeswitching, and language reclamation, students will develop the capacity to recognize patterns of language subordination and encourage linguistic diversity & justice in their own lives.
