Explores from a comparative perspective some of the world's earliest complex societies, with focus placed on those of the ancient Americas, specifically. Models of early complex society development are assessed using archaeological case studies and through the empirical analysis of archaeological data. The goal is to understand how and why processes of early complex society development unfolded differently in different places, and, importantly, how those processes gave rise to the world we live in today.
