Catalog description

This course offers an interpretive exploration of the experiences of Asian Americans within the United States. Students examine how individuals of Asian heritage have responded to inequities related to their claims to identity, belonging, well-being, and participation in American society. While recognizing the ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity within this group, it considers the social construction of Asian American pan-ethnic identity as a site of solidarity and ongoing negotiation shaped by shared struggles and collective action. Students will engage with key sociological issues around race, class, and gender dynamics; citizenship and political identity; family dynamics; inter-minority relations and transnational connections. Additionally, the course addresses contemporary challenges, such as the rise in anti-Asian violence and the role of pan-ethnic and ethnic-specific activism.
