Catalog description

This course will provide an overview of theories and research on human diversity with a focus on populations of California and the United States. Diversity will be defined in a broad sense to cover culture, ethnicity, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, and physical challenges such as deafness and physical size. Interacting effectively with others from different backgrounds does not come naturally. This course uses a combination of social psychology, group dynamics, and personal exploration, to teach skills and concepts that increase student appreciation of our diverse world, including but not limited to, the classroom, workplace, and interpersonal relationships. The format for this course will include readings, discussion, focused activities, group interactions, student projects, and lecture. This may be a service learning course.
