Catalog description

This course is intended to offer an introduction to counseling psychology, including: historical, philosophical, legal, theoretical, research, and ethical perspectives; and, approaches to individual, family and group counseling. Counseling will be examined through readings, written lecture, and recorded demonstrations. The course does not prepare students for counseling practicum or independent practice of counseling. This course is congruent with the Department of Psychology Framework in that it provides a general knowledge background, addresses assessment competencies, and integrates content knowledge and professional knowledge. In addition, the purpose of this course is to enhance students¿ awareness of the primary methods, goals, and philosophical/scientific underpinnings of psychological and related forms of counseling. The course will provide didactic and experiential learning opportunities exploring the various theories of and practical approaches to counseling. The instructor will focus on research-supported counseling strategies and techniques, as well as the less empirical/tangible elements of this unique form of human encounter. A focus on multicultural issues as they impact counseling will be advanced. Students will be encouraged to apply concepts toward increased their understanding of counseling as an extension of skilled coping and personal expansion, and toward becoming more adept consumers of counseling services.
