Catalog description

This course will examine the history of American citizenship and Civil Rights. The course will explore the context and ideological origins of the Republic's foundational documents, and the meanings of concepts such as equality and citizenship as they have evolved in American history. The course will also examine significant episodes, movements, and court cases in United States history that have tested, redefined, broadened, or narrowed the meanings of citizenship rights and protections, and equality and freedom. Finally, the course will explore how concepts of equality in the United States have evolved from the recognition of equality before nature, to guarantees of equality before the law, and to beliefs in the promise of equality of opportunity.
