A comparative study of revolutions in the Atlantic world of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries-the "Age of Democratic Revolution." The course will focus on revolutions such as the American, French, and Haitian revolutions and the political, economic, social, and cultural transformations that they unleashed. Topics include the importance of universal ideals and national sympathies, the place of race and slavery, the role of social and economic conflicts, and the influence of culture, including religion, on the course and outcome of revolution.
