Catalog description

This course provides an introduction to generative syntactic theory. Students will learn to draw tree diagrams and write transformation rules for sentences according to Chomsky's Aspects model. Toward the end of the course, students will learn the basic principles of the Government-Binding model. There will be a heavy emphasis on analyzing syntactic data- some from languages other than English.
