Catalog description
This course is designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge of chemical separations and common instrumental techniques utilized in chemical analysis. Separation of analytes from complex mixtures will be examined with a particular focus on chromatographic techniques. The instrumental techniques covered will involve an examination of the theoretical basis for the utility of each technique, and practical considerations for operating this instrumentation. The techniques covered will include UV/Vis, IR, GC-MS, AAS, HPLC, and Fluorescence Spectroscopy as well Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. 150 minutes of lecture/discussion per week.
