Deviance - behavior that parts with institutionalized expectations - is a regular feature of organized life: when we hold up a valued goal and compromise legitimate means of achieving it, a minority will resort to deviant means. Work is no exception, and understanding how deviance arises there can help us better explain work outcomes. In this seminar, we analyze top-notch empirical research on deviance at work, including topics such as workarounds, whistleblowing, goldbricking, resistance and leniencies. After establishing a theoretical foundation, we will ask how increased observability, data collection, AI-driven prediction and information access may change the deviance calculus for the world of work in the 21st century.
