Slavery and Capitalism

Catalog description

A long history of scholarship in sociology ties U.S. slavery to the development of capitalism and modern business, finance, and law. This classic work builds on theories by Durkheim and Weber, augmented by new research across disciplines. This course is designed to give students a framework for appreciating the centrality of the relationship between slavery and capitalism—and in the U.S., focusing on Racial Capitalism specifically. The course will then translating that relationship into new ways of understanding how tacit racism, hidden and unacknowledged, is structured into business and society today. This will help students navigate the increasingly diverse worksites of tomorrow.
