Sociology of Privilege

Sociology has long acknowledged and considered privilege as an integral component of systems of power and inequality. Despite this, privilege is far less theorized in sociology than are various forms of inequality and marginalization. We examine research on privileges as they are refracted through different configurations of identity and within different cultural contexts by putting sociological theory and research into dialogue with intersectionality and critical race theory. Finally, we learn about how structured advantages are both understood and experienced as well as the diverse ways they are connected with enduring systems, processes, and practices of inequality.
