Religion and Video Games
University of California Santa Barbara · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Surveys the shift in gaming culture from arcade amusement gaming centers to home video game consoles to online competitive play. This techno-social gaming dynamic reveals a complex network of relationships and cultural interactions: the attitudes and judgments of an individual player as directed towards game content, the manner in which said content is accessed, the games team of developers and the particulars of their programming, and the myriads worth of players found both locally and within internet gamespaces. With an appreciation of lived religion, this course examines the various interests and behaviors that constitute folk gaming culture; interests and behaviors that continue long after the purchase and play-through of a game.
