Catalog description

This course aims to recover the Epicurean tradition and its influence on various conceptions of philosophical materialismfrom the atomism of Lucretius to the reanimation of matter in the New Materialism. Students will read from the canon of the Epicurean tradition with the goal of identifying the several persistent challenges faced by those who adopt an ontological materialism or an empiricist epistemology. In the process, students will become familiar with the building blocks of modern atheism and secularism.
